Long Island Teen Dies From Crash Injuries

A Long Island high school senior died following an automobile crash just two weeks before she was set to graduate from high school.

The woman, 18, was a passenger in a 2007 Hyundai Elantra being driven by a 17-year-old classmate. Another 18-year old student was a passenger as well.

They were traveling south on Miller Avenue in Shoreham, New York and preparing to turn left on Route 25A when the Hyundai was hit by a 2006 Honda Accord traveling west on Route 25A. A 34-year-old man was behind the wheel of the Honda.

The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on June 13 as the teenagers were headed to a ceremony honoring seniors at Shoreham Wading River High School.

The young woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she later died of her injuries. The two drivers and the other passenger were treated for injuries that weren’t considered to be life-threatening.

The school district announced her death on social media and said its mental health team would be available for students who were grieving.

The young woman had been honored for her athletic and academic achievements. She was noted for being an all-league basketball and softball player as well as a scholar-athlete. She intended to study at the University of Hartford and play softball.
